It has a system of underground freshwater rivers interconnected to the cenotes and petenes, the latter being formations unique to the region that includes the Yucatan Peninsula and Florida.

It is home to the jaguar, puma, ocelot, jaguarundi, manatee, and monkeys, as well as a large number of resident and migratory bird species, such as the rare jabiru (Jabiru mycteria), the largest stork in the Americas. There are also large nesting colonies of frigate birds, pelicans, and roseate spoonbills, as well as sea turtles, swamp crocodiles, and river crocodiles.

Because it is considered a treasure of incalculable value to humanity, it was included on the World Heritage List on December 11, 1987. It is also part of the Biosphere Reserves of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) and a Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance.
